Pen-Based Interface Using Hand Motions in the Air

چکیده
A system which employs a stylus as an input device is suitable for creative activities like writing and painting. However, such a system does not always provide the user with a GUI that is easy to operate using the stylus. In addition, system usability is diminished because the stylus is not always integrated into the system in a way that takes into consideration the features of a pen. The purpose of our research is to improve the usability of a system which uses a stylus as an input device. We propose shortcut actions, which are interaction techniques for operation with a stylus that are controlled through a user’s hand motions made in the air. We developed the Context Sensitive Stylus as a device to implement the shortcut actions. The Context Sensitive Stylus consists of an accelerometer and a conventional stylus. We also developed application programs to which we applied the shortcut actions; e.g., a drawing tool, a scroll supporting tool, and so on. Results from our evaluation of the shortcut actions indicate that users can concentrate better on their work when using the shortcut actions than when using conventional menu operations. key words: human-computer interaction, pen-based interface, menu presentation, hand motions

3D Hand Motion Evaluation Using HMM
Gesture and motion recognition are needed for a variety of applications. The use of human hand motions as a natural interface tool has motivated researchers to conduct research in the modeling, analysis and recognition of various hand movements. In particular, human-computer intelligent interaction has been a focus of research in vision-based gesture recognition. In this work, we introduce a 3-...
متن کاملPen-to-mime: Pen-based interactive control of a human figure
In this paper a pen-based intuitive interface is presented, that controls a virtual human figure interactively. Recent commercial pen devices can detect not only the pen positions but also the pressure and tilt of the pen. We utilize such information to make a human figure perform various types of motions in response to the pen movements manipulated by the user. The figure walks, runs, turns an...
متن کاملOnline Handwriting Recognition Using an Accelerometer-Based Pen Device
This paper presents an accelerometer-based pen device for online handwriting recognition applications. The accelerometer-based pen device consists of a triaxial accelerometer, a microcontroller, and an RF wireless transmission module. Users can hold the pen device to write numerals in air without space limitations. The accelerations generated by hand motions are generated by the accelerometer e...
متن کاملAir-Writing Recognition - Part I: Modeling and Recognition of Characters, Words, and Connecting Motions
Air-writing refers to writing of linguistic characters or words in a free space by hand or finger movements. Airwriting differs from conventional handwriting; the latter contains the pen-up-pen-down motion, while the former lacks such a delimited sequence of writing events. We address air-writing recognition problems in a pair of companion papers. In Part 1, recognition of characters or words i...

Background and aim: Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) are widespread around the world and are the second most common cause of disability in work settings. A number of occupational factors such as forceful exertions, awkward postures, repetitive movements, and local contact stress can lead to the development of musculoskeletal problems. There is an association between the use of hand tools and o...
